Chilean needle grass regional best practice management
A set of five sites spanning the range of Chilean needle grass in Australia from Victoria to northern New South Wales is being established to identify and demonstrate regional best practice management of this weed of national significance. |

Elite cattle sires progeny test
The elite sire progeny test program will provide the tools necessary to position Australian genetics in the global market. It includes a comprehensive evaluation of steer program for growth, feed efficiency and carcass traits; plus evaluation of heifer progeny for growth, ultrasound carcass traits, calving ease and fertility. |

Extreme sire genotype x early-life nutrition (beef cattle)
This project is determining the extent to which nutrition early in life impacts on development of carcase tissues and on beef eating quality in cattle sired by extreme genotypes for muscle development (Piedmontese) or marbling (Wagyu). |

Feed efficiency gene discovery and gene expression
This project will deliver gene markers that will by 2012 reduce the feed costs for the National beef herd by $15.5million per annum through genetic improvement of net feed efficiency in seedstock cattle. It will use DNA sequence information and feed efficiency test data from new generations of cattle from the unique divergent feed efficiency selection lines at the Trangie Research Centre. |

Grain & Graze Project
A Primary Industries Innovation Centre (UNE & NSW DPI)project in collaboration with the Border Rivers CMA, QMDC and CSIRO to investigate the question Is the introduction of a short or long term grazing phase in cropping systems in the Border Rivers Catchment profitable and environmentally, financially and socially sustainable? |

Improved perennial grass cultivars
Graziers in the Great Dividing Range in Victoria and NSW have few perennial grass options. New cultivars of cocksfoot, tall fescue and phalaris need to be evaluated more widely in the target area to provide alternatives to lucerne in phase farming systems. |

Improving the efficiency of feed utilisation for beef production-Beef CRC
The aim of the project is to reduce the cost of beef production through genetic improvement in efficiency of feed utilisation. Previous research in Australia and elsewhere has established a base level of knowledge of the genetics of feed efficiency, and demonstrated that the beef industry could make substantial improvements in this trait. |

Neo-natal Lamb Survival and Reproduction Rate
The project will review current knowledge on lamb survival, identify regional management practices and evaluate previous adoption methodologies. New approaches to adoption focused on the pregnancy scanning industry will be used as a means of reaching a wider cross-section of producers. |
Optimising Reproductive Capacity in Sheep Flock
To develop a publication and workshop notes that demonstrate how producers can optimise flock reproduction.
The project will cover areas that have an impact on reproductive performance including:
Nutrition
Fertility
Ram management
Flock management and production targets
Lamb loss and survival
There will be a list of overall management recommendations |

Perennial Forage Grass Improvement
Grass cultivars are required for low rainfall recharge environments that are drought tolerant and will persist in acid, low fertility soils to increase water use in these environments. There are 3 components to the project, tall fescue for the Northern NSW, cocksfoot for Southern Australia and sub-tropical grasses for both temperate and Mediterranean climates. |
