Accounting for Nutrients
The ‘Accounting for Nutrients’ project will develop a standardised nutrient accounting framework for the Australian dairy industry that will better quantify nutrient inputs, outputs and within farm nutrient efficiencies, and reduce nutrient accumulation and losses off-farm.
Benefits of recycled organics in agriculture
The project promotes strategic use of recycled organics products in agriculture by firstly identifying the potential markets (in terms of crop/soil systems) and secondly quantifying benefits by carrying field trials and cost/benefit analyses.
Cadmium in soil
The rationale for the project is that about 40% of the cadmium (Cd) in Australian diets is consumed from plant products, principally vegetables. The concentration of Cd in these products is increasing and is unlikely to decrease in the forseeable future, although there is insufficient data to test these claims. There is an opportunity to protect the health of the Australian population by decreasing the uptake of Cd by vegetables.
Chars and soils
Biomass Energy Services & Technology P/L (BEST), will be testing the pilot scale production of six chars from green waste and poultry manure and will be producing non activated, activated and activated enhanced char. NSW DPI will be commissioned to collaboratively undertake an assessment of these chars in terms of agronomic and soil quality improvement values.
Chemwise- Sustainable Chemical Use in the Sydney Basin
This project for the intensive horticulture industry in the Sydney Basin will fund three bilingual officers (Arabic, Khmer and Chinese speaking) who will improve communication between growers and technical advisers and improve the chemical management amongst growers.
Climate Change Water Smart Farms Project
This Project seeks to reduce potable water used by irrigators in the Hawkesbury Nepean Basin. Water reduction will occur by increasing water use efficiency through the application of incentives to retro-fit irrigation infrastructure as a part of the Water Smart Farms Project.
Coastal NSW Dairy Catchments
This project will develop knowledge and tools to allow cost effective implementation of refined nutrient management practices on dairy farms to protect surface water quality. The project will include farm and catchment scale risk assessments, farm runoff monitoring, and development of a simple tool to assess benefits of practice change.
Cooperative approaches to weed management – Hawkesbury Lower Nepean
Develop an integrated weed control strategy. The project will develop solutions to address known critical issues for weed and natural resource management across the landscape: Better property and district cooperation and planning. Analysis of the landscape to identify key management issues. New incursions and early intervention. Reduced reliance on herbicides. Need for better analysis of priorities according to highest impact on the natural resources of the catchment.
Effect of granulated biosolids application to turf on nutrient runoff and growth characteristics
This project funded by Sydney Water, aims to determine the impact of surface applications of granulated biosolids on runoff water quality characteristics, as well as on turf production and quality characteristics. Recommendations on appropriate application rates and best management practices will also be developed as part of this project.
Guidelines for the safe re-use of metal-containing wastes on land
The National Biosolids Research Project aims to provide a sound scientific basis for regulating inputs of Cd, Cu and Zn into soils from biosolids and other wastes on a nation-wide basis.
