A survey of nitrate levels in hydroponic lettuce

Nitrate levels in several hydroponic lettuce varieties, from the Sydney Basin, were measured four times over six months. Lettuce variety and grower practices had the greatest affect on nitrate levels. Season had little affect. Levels were well below maximum limits set in Europe. |

ACIAR Cambodia Vegetable project

To establish a model for improved production and supply chain performance for the Cambodian vegetable industry, this project will investigate and implement changes to the production and postharvest handling and storage of vegetables, commencing with high performing, disease resistant tomato lines being released from the current AVRDC-Cambodia collaboration. Selection of tomato as the initial ‘model’ crop reflects the recognised future importance of this crop to Cambodian producers. |

The project aims to assess the postharvest storage benefits of treating Pink Lady apples with the plant growth regulator Retain (AVG). In this experiment, fruit from two different districts (SA and Vic) and with two different maturities will be stored in both air and controlled atmosphere. |

The ongoing use of diphenylamine (DPA) to control the storage disorder superficial scald is of some concern to the Australian apple industry. Reliable and cost effective alternatives to DPA are required for long term storage of apples. This project will assist in the demonstration of Smartfresh technology (1-MCP treatment) to control scald in Australian grown apples |

This project completed a business development strategy for a newly formed cooperative of Cambodian market gardeners, based in south west Sydney, the NSW Cambodian Growers Marketing Cooperative. It was a pilot project, the aim of which was to provide a business plan for the Co-operative so it could become sustainable. |
