Lecanium cappari Froggatt 1915: 604
Lectotype:
adult female (slide mount), Gunnedah, NSW, Cappras, designated by Gullan and Hodgson (1998)
Paralectotypes:
three slide mounts, Gunnedah, NSW, 11.xi.1921, W.W.F. Cappris
six slide mounts (2 adult females and four first instar nymphs), Nyngan, NSW, 11.xi.1921, W.W.F., Capparis
four samples (dried mounts of leaves with scales), Nyngan, NSW, 11.xi.1921, W.W.F., Capparis
Note: The dried material from Gunnedah from which the lectotype and three paralectotypes were mounted have not been returned to ASCU. Froggatt's (1921b: 29) original description of the species does not give a precise locality as the source of his type material but simply refers to "the western scrubs of New South Wales". Consequently, the material from Nyngan listed above is not excluded from the type series. This material must therefore be regarded as part of the paralectotype series. The handwritten labels on the Nyngan material clearly say Capparis and not the mispellings noted on the slide mounts from Gunnedah.

Current combination: Austrolecanium cappari (Froggatt)

Aspidiotus (Aspidiella) rubribullata Froggatt 1915
Syntypes:

2 samples (dry mounts of twigs with scales), 322 (Wicken), Perth, WA, 11.vii.1900, W.W.F., E. sp.
4 samples (dry mounts of twigs with scales), Trangie, NSW, 6.vii.1910, W.W.F. on eucalypt.

Aspidiotus (Targionia) coralinus Froggatt 1915a: 14
?syntypes:
1 sample (dry mount of twig with scales), Dog Wood, Native Dog, NSW, 12.v.1899, W.W.F. [also bearing label Aspidiotus coralinus Frogg. Bourke, NSW)
Note: This sample bears more collection information than provided by the original description and its status as part of the original type series might be considered suspect. Native Dog bore is approximately 50km N of Bourke and therefore could be considered to be in the Bourke region. The term "Dog Wood" may refer to a locality in this region or may be the common name of a plant host. Certainly it is not a name associated with Eremophila sturtii, the native shrub on which Froggatt (1915a: 14) says his type specimens were collected. The common name "native dogwood" usually refers to species of Jacksonia (Fabaceae) although it has also been used for Olearia (Asteraceae).

Chionaspis eucalypti Froggatt 1915a: 61
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of twigs with scales), Mittagong, NSW, 4.ix.1901, W.W.F.

Chionaspis eugeniae Maskell 1891: 14
"cotype":
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), no collection data
Note: This specimen is labelled "Maskell's type (5)" in Froggatt's hand as well as "Co-type" and "Maskell's cotype". It is unclear whether this indicates syntype status or just that the specimen was simply identified by Maskell or even just compared with Maskell's type material.

Fiorinia acaciae Maskell 1891: 16
"cotype":
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), "W.W.F.  6  1895" [on three separate lines]
Note: This specimen bears an annotation "cotype". The note under Chionaspis eugeniae Maskell, above, also applies here, particularly as the original description was based on material from Adelaide, collected by a Mr Crawford, and later specimens sent by Mr French. The fact that the sample in ASCU was apparently collected four years after the name was published would also tend to reinforce the non-type status of this sample.

Fiorinia geijeriae Froggatt 1915a: 58
Syntypes:
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), Narrabri, NSW, on Geijera salicifolia

Gymnaspis acaciae Froggatt 1915a: 32
Syntypes:
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), Pera Bore, NSW, 12.v.1899
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), Pera Bore, NSW, Ac. pendula
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), Pera Bore, NSW, 30-1906 (W.W.F.)
1 sample (dry mount of leaf portion with scales), Pera Bore, NSW, "on Gilgin"?
Note: The addition in inverted commas on this last label is handwritten by Froggatt and is unclear.

Mytilaspis chitonosa Froggatt 1915a: 36
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of twig with scales), Condobolin, NSW, 15.xi.1899, W.W.F. , on Templetonia egena
3 adult females (on two slide mounts, prepared 24.vii.1964), same data as above

Mytilaspis cortrioides Froggatt 1915a: 38
Syntypes:
3 samples (dry mounts of twigs with scales), Mittagong, NSW, iii.1902, W.W.F. on Acacia decurrens
Note: ASCU also holds a sample of the same species, identified by Froggatt, from Acacia at Toronto, NSW (1898, W.W.F.) bearing an identification label "Mytilaspis cortrioides mihi, also at Mittagong". Although not included in his type series, the specimen was clearly known to Froggatt when the name was originally published.

Mytilaspis crassa Froggatt 1915a: 38
Syntype:
1 sample (dry mount of leafy twig with scales), Bowral, NSW, 1898, W.W.F.
Note: Froggatt (1915a: ) states that the species was collected from Melaleuca sp. The sample appears to be on M. styphelioides but the host is not mentioned on the label. ASCU has three further non-type samples of the species bearing Froggatt labels, two from Bankstown, NSW and one from Glenfield, NSW, and all three include Melaleuca on the labels.

Mytilaspis eucalypti Froggatt 1915a: 39
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of bark with scales), Mittagong, Eucalyptus.
7 adult females (on 6 slide mounts, prepared 24.vii.1964), same data as above

Mytilaspis lobulatus Froggatt 1915a: 42
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of twigs with scales), Gunnedah, NSW, Casuarina (one sample also has "W.W.F.")
Note: One sample has a determination label from L.A.S. Johnson (National Herbarium of NSW) identifying the host as Casuarina cristata Miq. ssp. cristata.

Mytilaspis mulgae Froggatt 1915a: 44
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of leaves with scales), Pera Bore, NSW, 12.v.1899, W.W.F., mulga
2 slide mounts (prepared 24.vii.1964), same data as above

Syntypes:
4 samples (dry mounts of bark with scales), Cowra, NSW, 7.vi.1900, W.W.F. Acacia decurrens

Mytilaspis subspiculifera Froggatt 1915a: 47
Syntypes:
2 samples (dry mounts of twig cutting with scales), Whitton, NSW, 10.vii.1900, on yarran
Note: Froggatt (1915a: 47) identifies yarran as Exocarpus aphylla (Family Santalaceae).

Family LECANODIASPIDIDAE
Note: Froggatt (1915) mispelled the nominal genus as Lecaniodaspis
Lecanodiaspis convexus Froggatt 1915: 761
Syntypes:
1 sample (dry mount of twig with scales), Picton, NSW, Eucalyptus sp.

Lecanodiaspis dealbatae Lambdin 1973b: 37
Paratype:
1 slide mount, Victoria, Australia (Emerald), 1915, coll: French, on Azalea dealbata
Note: This slide has two errors of data. Emerald is in Queensland, not Victoria, and the host is Acacia dealbata, not Azalea. These errors are not present in Lambdin's original publication (Lambdin 1973).

Lecanodiaspis dilatata Froggatt 1915: 762
Syntypes:
1 sample (dry mount of twig with scale), Sydney, NSW 27.ix.1912, McCarthy

Family MARGARODIDAE
Melaleucococcus phacelopilus Bhatti 1990: 501
Paratypes:
2 females, slide mounted, Port Stephens, NSW, 23.ix.1925, on Leptospermum ericifolium [but see Note below]
Note: The date given in the original description for these two specimens is 29.ix.1925 which appears to be an error of transposition. In addition, the host name written on the slides, Leptospermum ericifolium, is not a valid species of Leptospermum. Since the genus is supposedly restricted to Melaleuca (Bhatti 1990: 495), this label would again appear to be in error and should refer to Melaleuca ericifolium which is a valid species.
ASCU holds a further four slide mounted females collected at Tea Gardens, Port Stephens on 23.ix.1925 by W.B. Gurney and identified as this species by Bhatti in 1989.

Family ALEYRODIDAE

Aleurocanthus froggatti Martin 1999: 27
paratypes:
1 puparium, nr Gunnedah, NSW, 13.ix.1902, W.W.. Froggatt, on Heterodendron oleifolium.
Note: Martin (1999) gave the type locality for this species, matched by this paratype, as "NSW, Sydney, nr Gunnedah". Froggatt used printed "NSW Sydney" labels on which he hand wrote other localities within NSW. Gunnedah is approximately 330km NNW of Sydney.

2 puparia,Condobolin, NSW, 10.x.1902, W.W.F., on Acacia pendula

Note: The labels on these two paratype slides read ' "Ac. pendula / Condob. NSW / 14.10.02 WWF" "Aleuroplatus / 9 / Conamble, NSW" '. The quotation marks indicate that this information comes from two separate labels (written by Froggatt) attached to the dry specimens from which these slides were made. This would appear to be confusing Condobolin and Coonamble which are separate towns about 300km apart in NSW. The first label would presumably give the correct data since this would have been attached to the specimen following its collection and the identification label attached at a later date. Martin (1999) gives "Coonamble, NSW" as the source of these paratypes and, for the reason given above, this would appear to be incorrect, the specimens originating from Condobolin, NSW.

Aleucocanthus valenciae Martin and Carver (Martin 1999: 30)
Paratype: puparium, Native Dog, NSW, on camel bush, 1899, Froggatt.
Note: "Native Dog" is presumably Native Dog bore on the Darling River about 50km N of Bourke in western NSW. "Camel bush" is probably Trichodesma zeylanica (Family Boraginaceae).

Aleuroduplidens eucalyptifolia Martin 1999: 38
Paratypes:
1 puparium, Pajinga, nr Charters Towers, Queensland, 4.x.1904, Mrs Black
Note: Martin (1999) gave the collector's name as "Blank" where it is actually "Mrs Black".

1 puparium, Sydney, NSW, 11.xi.1919, W.W. Froggatt
1 puparium, Mt Druitt, NSW, 10.vii.1902, W.W. Froggatt

Note: The collector's initials on the data label of the Gosford paratype are "W.B.G." not W.B.F. as given by Slater. W.B.G. is W.B. Gurney, former Chief Entomologist with NSW Agriculture.

Family PSYLLIDAE

Cardiaspis brunneus Froggatt 1923: Fig.1.
Lectotype:
lerp, Glenfield, NSW, WWF, 24.x.1921, Basket lerp, designated by Taylor (1962: 320)
Paralectotype:
1 lerp, same data as, and mounted with, lectotype
Note: Taylor (1962) comments that no formal description was given of this species and the name is based on illustrations prepared by Emile Zeck and published by Froggatt (1923). Glenfield is a suburb in the western parts of Sydney.

Current combination: Cardiaspina brunnea (Froggatt), Tuthill and Taylor 1955: 236

Cardiaspis spiniferus Froggatt 1923: Fig.3.
Lectotype:
lerp, Wattle Flat, NSW, 16.i.1902, W.W.F., designated by Taylor (1962: 321.
Note: Taylor (1962) comments that no formal description was given of this species and the name is based on illustrations prepared by Emile Zeck and published by Froggatt (1923).

Current combination: Cardiaspina spinifera (Froggatt), Tuthill and Taylor 1955: 236

Cardiaspis textrix Froggatt 1901: 296
?Paralectotype:
1 lerp, labelled "Red Net. Psylla. Adelong, N.S.W., 20.10.99, Cardiaspis textrix Frog., Type 1901 W.W.F." all in Froggatt's hand.
Note: This lerp would appear to have been collected with the type series by Froggatt in October 1899. There are some discrepancies between the information provided with the original description by Froggatt (1901) and the information quoted by Taylor (1962) from the labels of the specimens he designated as lectotype and paralectotype. Froggatt (1901) gives no date and states that the specimens were collected on Eucalyptus melliodora. Taylor (1962) states that the type specimens are labelled from Eucalyptus and are dated 2.10.99. Taylor (1962) also lists a female and two lerps with the same label data as the lerp specimen illustrated here.

Current combination: Cardiaspina textrix (Froggat), Tuthill and Taylor 1955: 236

Eucalyptolyma maideni Froggatt 1901: 262
Paralectotype:
1 lerp labelled: "White lace horn lerp, Bot. Gardens, 24/5.99, WWF, Type 1901 W.W.F., Eucalyptolyma maideni Frog.", all in Froggatt's hand.
Note: In his revision of the genus Eucalyptolyma, Taylor (1987), designated a lectotype for E. maideni and listed the type series, including "with 2 lerps on one card, labelled the same as the type series" (Taylor 1987: 100). All the material used by Taylor was in the ANIC and the specimen illustrated would appear to be a third lerp paralectotype.

Aphalara leptospermi Froggatt 1903: 320
Lectotype:
male, Frankston, Victoria, C. French jnr, on Leptospermum laevigatum, 16.x.1902, designated by Taylor (1960: 385).
Paralectotype:
1 female, same data as, and mounted with, lectotype.
Note: Taylor (1960), in designating the lectotype for A. leptospermi, did not include the sex of his designated lectotype. Nor did he mention that the specimen mount bears two specimens, a male and a female, as shown in the images provided here. Later, Taylor (1987) transferred the species to the new genus Leptospermonastes with A. leptospermi as its type species. In this latter paper, Taylor noted that the lectotype is a male. Consequently, the female specimen mounted with the lectotype male is presumed to be a paralectotype although it was again not mentioned by Taylor (1987).

Current combination: Leptospermonastes leptospermi (Froggatt), Taylor 1987: 124.

Family OMANIIDAE

"Omania australiensis China & Hoberlandt"
"holotype":
Heron Island, Queensland, 2-9.vi.1951 [ASCT00131158]
Note: The mount consists of an adult and an immature specimen on the same card as shown in the images provided here. It would appear that the holotype label attached to these specimens was never validated by publication. We can find no reference to any joint paper between W.E. China and Ludvig Hoberlandt. It is most likely the same species that was later described by Woodward (1958) as Omania marksae.
