Holger Löcker studied at Karl-Franzens Universität in Graz, Austria and graduated with his Magister of Natural Sciences (Zoology) in 2003. His research focussed on Central European Auchenorrhyncha in different biotopes and associated with different host plant species. 
He started working for the department in 2003 as a casual employee for the Fruit Fly monitoring program and has subsequently been involved in the monitoring programs for Western Flower Thrips and Red Imported Fire Ants. Since 2005 he has been providing technical support for Andrew Mitchell's molecular diagnostic projects, mainly with Lepidoptera.
