Membership details

Membership of the Society is open to any person interested in the study of insects and related groups, upon nomination by two financial members. An application form (PDF format) can be downloaded from here or is available from the Secretary and from Regional Councillors .

Society membership was 285 on 17 August 1965 and 331 at the end of 1966 when foundation membership closed. This has steadily increased to the present number of over 600 members. This makes the Society one of the largest biological sciences groups in Australia.

About three-quarters of the Society's members are professional and one-quarter are amateur entomologists. Three State Societies - The Entomological Society of Queensland , The Entomological Society of New South Wales and the Entomological Society of Victoria - are Affiliates of the AES. Business firms have membership as Sustaining Associates.

Member Benefits

Membership offers a unique opportunity for professional, student and amateur entomologists to:

  • belong to one of Australia's largest professional biological Societies, affiliated with FASTS, the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies.
  • publish in and receive the internationally recognised Australian Journal of Entomology published quarterly each year.
  • receive Myrmecia , the Society's News Bulletin - an informal communication, published quarterly, letting you know what is happening in Australian entomology.
  • attend the Society's annual scientific conference with your peers.
  • apply for the Society's research grants.
  • compete in the annual Insect Illustration Competition and Photographic Competition; all professional, amateur and student entomologists welcome.

Student members have the added benefits of:

  • meeting entomologists and becoming aware of entomological issues during the development of their careers.
  • participating in the student forum and annual student dinner held in conjunction with the Society's annual conference.
  • applying for the Society's annual Phil Carne Prize for excellence in a scientific paper.

Companies are especially invited to become Sustaining Associates of the Society.

AUSTRALIAN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY Inc.
RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME

The AES Research Grants Scheme is intended to encourage the advancement and dissemination of entomological knowledge, particularly in relation to the Australian fauna. Applications for conference travel will not be considered.

The grants are primarily for small, short-term projects and will be available only to members of the Society of at least 12 months standing. Groups will be eligible provided that the primary researcher is a Society member. Total funds available will vary from year to year but will normally be in the order of $2000.

A report to the Executive in a form suitable for publication in Myrmecia will be required at the end of the project or, at the latest, by December in the year of the grant.

Each application needs to state clearly:

- the aim of the project
- the expected duration of the project
- a detailed budget, and
- contact addresses (including email) and telephone numbers of the participants

The names of one or two possible referees may also be supplied.

The Society Executive will appoint a selection panel to allocate and administer the grants. Applications may be for any amount up to $2000 but remember that small, short-term projects which enable a diverse range of work to be funded will be favoured. Successful applicants will be notified in December and published in Myrmecia in the following (February) issue.

Three copies of your application should reach the Secretary (society address at top of this page) no later than 31 October.
