Subfamily Euacanthellinae
Tribe Euacanthellini

Return to start of key

Only three species of this Tribe are known from Australia, one of which also occurs in New Zealand. They are medium sized insects found in grasslands and pastures. The tegmina are either brachypterous or extend to about the 8th abdominal segment. The head is triangular with the sides of the frontoclypeus narrowly visible in dorsal view.

Note: This species was synonymised with E. palustris  by Evans (1966: 143), but reinstated by Evans (1974: 174) who listed Wilson's Valley (Kosciusko region) and Katoomba (Blue Mountains) in NSW, in addition to the original Tas record.

Note: This species occurs in both a macropterous and brachypterous form. The head of the brachypterous form is much longer than that of the macropterous form. The images provided show both forms.

Evans (1938a) described three species, E. palustris, E. bicolor and E. insularis. In 1966 (Evans 1966: 143), he synonymised all three names under E. palustris and added another species, E. brunnea from NZ. Later (Evans 1974) he reinstated E. bicolor and synonymised E. brunnea with E. palustris.  At the same time, Knight (1974: 476) also synonymised E. brunnea, but under the name E. insularis. As Evans (1966) can be regarded as the first reviser, and was certainly the first to propose the synonymy between E. palustris and E. insularis, his use of the name E. palustris gives this name seniority over E. insularis.
