The Acostemminae are distributed in eastern Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka (Dietrich 2000). Evans (1972b) placed a single monotypic genus, Telopetulcus from Papua (=Irian Jaya), to the subfamily with the qualification that he believed the genus had affinities with other species of the Acostemminae based on the structures of the head, thorax and male genitalia. Although his placement of the species in the subfamily was tentative only, he stated "it seems preferable to draw attention to possible relationships rather than to propose a new subfamily for every seemingly isolated genus of leafhoppers." Oman et al. (1990) retained the genus in the Acostemminae but Dietrich (2000) does not include New Guinea in his distribution of the subfamily as listed above. |
