Achilid planthoppers |
| The
Family Achilidae are mainly fungal feeding species often living in leaf
litter or under logs. The wings are usually held almost horizontally when
folded over the abdomen. Typical forms are drab in colour, although there
are some outstanding exceptions such as Achilus flammeus Kirby,
which is bright pink with small blue spots, and species of Aneipo,
which are also brightly coloured. Some species are bright green.
The majority of the Australian genera are probably still waiting to be described and identification of material is consequently very difficult. Fennah (1950) and Emeljanov (1991) provide keys to Tribes and genera. A pictorial key to Tribes is available here [update: 29.ix.2004]. New Zealand has only two species, one endemic and one shared with Australia [update: 12.ii.2001]. |
