Genus Colgaroides Distant 1910b: 324

Type species: Poeciloptera acuminata Walker 1851

Distribution: Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines

Species: Three species are known, two of which are found in Australia: C. acuminata (Walker) from Qld, NT, WA, PNG,  Indonesia (Sumba), Irian Jaya, Timor [update: 26.iv.2001] and C. viridis Lallemand (1935: 665), from NT. The other species is C. everetti Distant (1910b: 325) from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Melichar (1902), in his description of Cromna frontalis (=C. acuminata) indicates that he had three specimens, from Rockhampton, Australia and "Palmeston". There is no locality of this spelling in either Australia or New Zealand but Palmerston, New Zealand and Cape Palmerston, Queensland are both possibilities as is Darwin, NT which was formerly known as Palmerston. There are no records of this species from New Zealand in NZAC or other NZ collections and Melichar's specimen is probably from Darwin. [update: 27.x.2004]

Host records: Medler (2000) gives the following host records for species of Colgaroides:
C. acuminata: Jambolan plum (Syzygium cuminii, Myrtaceae)
C. everetti: Citrus reticulata (Rutaceae)
C. viridis: Opilia amentacea (Opiliaceae) [update: 26.iv.2001]

Note: The presence of five longitudinal carinae on the frons (in addition to the carinate lateral margins) clearly differentiates species of Colgaroides from the otherwise similar species of  Colgar which only have three carinae on the frons. The identities of the various species have not been clearly established and further taxonomic work is needed on this genus.
