Genus Colgar Kirkaldy

Please note that the genus Karrama Medler also keys out here. Medler (1988: 88) states that this genus, created for Colgar laraticum var. punctatum Lallemand, differs from Colgar "in head morphology" but does not provide comparative details. The species is unknown to the author of these pages.

Genus Colgar Kirkaldy 1900: 242

Type species: Cromna peracuta Walker 1858

Distribution: Australia, New Guinea, S.E. Asia

Species: Six species are recorded from Australia: 

C. peracutum (Walker 1858: 120) from NT, Qld and Northern NSW, 
C. roseipennis Distant (1910: 307) from Qld, 
C. rufostigmatum Distant (1910: 308) from Qld and 
C. tricolor Distant (1910: 309), also from Qld. 
C. chlorospilum (Walker) from Darwin, NT (Medler 2001)
C. surrectum (Melichar) from Cornwallis Is, Qld. (Medler 2001)

Known Hosts: Medler (2001) lists the following hosts for Australian species of Colgar:
C. peracutum: Melaleuca (Myrtaceae), Citrus (Rutaceae), Artocarpus (Moraceae), Clerodendrum (Verbenaceae), Sophora (Fabaceae), Coffea (Rubiaceae), Musa (Musaceae); C. tricolor: Cacao (Sterculiaceae) [update: 26.iv.2001]

Note: Fletcher (1988) pointed out that the conical extension of the head in Colgar is part of the frons with the anterior margin of the vertex, marked by a transverse line representing an obsolete anterior carina, situated considerably short of the apex of the cone (click HERE to see illustration). The genus is in need of further taxonomic work.
