Caliscelid planthoppers |

| The Caliscelidae
have been treated as a subfamily of the Issidae until recently. Emeljanov
(1999) has outlined the reasons for
regarding the group as a family in its own right and provides references
to other work on which this is based. The principal characters are provided
by the structures of the female genitalia and ovipositor.
Caliscelids are usually highly brachypterous with the tegmina barely reaching over the first abdominal segments. Some of the Australian species, most of which are undescribed, have the forelegs expanded or have the head produced in front of the eyes. |
