The Acanaloniidae is a family well represented in Central and South America with a few species in S.E. Asia and Africa. A single species, Chlorochara vivida (Fabricius 1775), was listed from "Australia" by Fabricius but all other records indicate that it (along with all other species of the genus) is restricted to South and Central America, including the Caribbean. In the absence of known specimens from Australia, this record is presumed to be in error.

Emeljanov's (1999) transfer of the subfamilies Trienopinae and Tonginae from the Issidae to the Acanaloniidae included a number of species of Tonginae recorded in Australia and a large number of species of Tonginae in Indonesia. This meant that the family was well represented in Australia until Gnezdilov (2006) transfered the Tonginae back to the Nogodinidae.

Generally speaking, acanaloniids resemble small compact flatids but lack granulations on the tegmen typical of Flatidae. They are represented in Indonesia by two monotypic genera.
