Please Read This:  A number of the species illustrated in this key/list are variable in size, colour and other features. We have attempted to minimise use of these variable characters wherever possible. If in any doubt about the identity of your fruit fly please send the specimen to the ASCU or other recognised fruit fly authority. Several species not yet recorded from New South Wales have been included in the key because they are likely to occur in the rainforests of northern NSW despite the lack of confirmed records. The inclusion of Ceratitis capitata (Weidemann) in the key/list (despite having been eradicated from NSW) will make the key useful for identification of all fruit fly species in southern Australia south of 290S latitude.

Credits: This key was produced for ASCU (NSW Agriculture) by Peter Gillespie and Brad McNeil.
All line drawings used to illustrate adult fruit flies have been reproduced from Memoirs of the Qld Museum Vol: 26, 1989 with the kind permission of the Queensland Museum.
