Subfamily/Tribe: Deltocephalinae: Athysanini

Distribution: E. plebeius is more common in eastern Australia, while E. nanus seems to be the more common species in Western Australia. Both have extensive distributions outside of Australia. 

Economic Status: Feed exclusively on grasses and commonly found in high numbers

Notes: Exitianus species are moderately sized leafhoppers (7-9mm) coloured dull brown with a distinctive transverse black band across the vertex. The two species recorded from Australia are E. plebeius (Kirkaldy 1906) and E. nanus (Distant 1908). They can be differentiated by the spination of the male pygofer, illustrated by Ross (1968) who revised the genus. Two other Australian species, E. selbyi (Evans 1938a) and E. pallidus (Evans 1938a), ascribed to this genus are not species of Exitianus.
