Genus Chaetophyes Schmidt 1919: 367, Type species, by monotypy: Chaetophyes bicolor Schmidt, (synonymised with Chaetophyes compacta (Walker) by Maa 1963)

Generic Distribution: Australia, with records from Ceram and Vanuatu that need to be verified

Australian species: Three species are known from Australia, C. admittens (Walker), C. compacta (Walker) and C. vicina Lallemand.

Comments: C. compacta and C. vicina are common and widespread in eastern Australia frequently collected in large numbers in light traps. Most individuals of all species are shiny greenish brown on the head and thorax with extensive dark brown areas on the tegmina, although males of C. compacta are usually entirely dark brown to black, occasionally with green heads. The anterior prominence of the head, which can be quite snout-like in profile, varies within species.
