Asian and Exotic Fruit
MANGOSTEEN

Garcinia mangostana

Cantonese: Saan Jook
Malay: Manggis

A round fruit between a snooker ball and a tennis ball in size, with a hard purplish skin, that turns to light green at the stem. The flesh is white, sweet, and considered by some as having the finest taste of all tropical fruit. Fruit are consigned to market in trays, and are handled very carefully, for their fragility and high market value.

Growing conditions and Availability: Grown in Northern Territory and Tropical  Queensland, most market throughput coming from 15-20 growers in North Queensland. The trees take a long time to bear, so supply is inelastic to the increasing demand, hence the high prices that the fruit can command.Australian production is estimated at 10 tonnes.
