Asian and Exotic Fruit
BLACK SAPOTE

Diospyros digyna

English: Chocolate Fruit, Black Persimmon
French: Kaki noir

Although called a Sapote, the Black Sapote is of the Persimmon family, as is the Ebony tree. Persimmon shaped, the fruit has a green skin, and the flesh is chocolate-brown. The flesh tastes chocolatey also, but only when perfectly ripe. The taste is otherwise bitter.

Growing conditions: Subtropical—northern New South Wales and Queensland.

Availability: The main season is November to February, but some trees in the Northern Territory bear fruit through the year, so sporadic supplies can reach southern markets throughout the year.

Annual supplies to all southern markets would not exceed 10 tonnes.
