Asian and Exotic Fruit
ABIU

Pouteria caimito

Spanish: Caimo
French: Canistel
Cantonese: Dan huang guo

Light yellow and less pointed at the end than the Yellow Sapote, the Abiu has caramel flavoured flesh, which is translucent and white in colour.

Growing conditions and Availability: Abiu are grown in North Queensland and Northern Territory, the season being from December through to July. Fruit are still in the market until September. It is estimated that the total quantity in Sydney market is only between 1500 and 2000 trays per year, about 8 tonnes.

Marketing: The fruit is marketed in single layer trays and is consigned to specialist wholesalers. The fruit is fragile and difficult to handle, and so wholesalers are reluctant to trade in the fruit unless there is an established demand.
